A Girl (poem for class)

A Girl

My heart was thunder in my ears.
The jelly cold on my pregnant belly.
The unyielding pressure from the wand just a bit uncomfortable.
Dwayne joked with the technician.
“What do you think it is?” she asked.
“A boy.” I said confidently. “Gable.”
“Well, it’s a…” the pause lasted an eternity.
My breath caught somewhere between my mouth and my diaphragm,
unable to escape.
“Girl.”
Shock and joy flooded my entire being.
Tears of absolute and complete delight covered my cheeks.
“A girl,” I whispered, “Meryt Sherrill.”
